The Parent Commitment

“The fate of the child is in the hands of his parents”
Dr Shinichi Suzuki

The child absorbs everything from their environments. However, in this busy world it is so hard to maintain a steady and ordered environment in the home. Yet it is the parent challenge to try and provide this for their children. Parents are the key to the success of the Suzuki Talent Education programme.

Before starting out on this journey parents need to look at their life style and ask themselves: “Can we see ourselves sitting with our child every day to make music for the next 5 years?” If the answer is a tentative “Yes” then you are ready to begin. There are no guarantees in all this as life can veer suddenly in other directions. But the starting point must be a sense of real commitment to the idea of personal investment in your children’s learning to play beautiful music.

So the parent is responsible for being the child's assistant and helping with daily practice which includes:

  • Creating the proper environment so the child will have a successful learning experience

  • Playing the recordings as requested by the teacher

  • Assisting the child with memorizing a piece as needed

  • Revising regularly music already learnt

  • Teaching fingerings as requested by the teacher

  • Helping the child become their own teacher by always asking, “How do you…?”

  • Participating in Suzuki music events

  • Deepening their knowledge of the Suzuki process through regular attendance at talks offered by teachers and through reading texts on the Suzuki Method recommended by their teacher

Before enrolling with your teacher you should purchase and read a copy of Nurtured by Love, by Dr Shinichi Suzuki
